About González-Ruibal

Dr. Alfredo González-Ruibal is an archaeologist with the Institute of Heritage Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council, and is joining the After Discourse group at CAS through May and June.

He has PhD in prehistoric archaeology from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he was also assistant professor before joining the Incipit. Between 2005 and 2007 he was post-doctoral fellow with the Stanford Archaeology Center.

His main areas of research are the archaeology of the contemporary past and African studies. For the last two decades, he has been exploring the darker side of modernity (war, dictatorship, colonialism, capitalism). He is interested in the wake of destruction that modernity leaves behind, its fields of ruins and forgotten places.

He has recently edited two volumes: Reclaiming Archaeology (Routledge, 2013) and Ethics and the Archaeology of Violence (with Gabriel Moshenska, Springer, 2015) and is the author of An Archaeology of Resistance. Materiality and time in an African borderland (Rowman and Littlefield, 2014), which received the Society of Africanist Archaeologists Book Prize for the best book published in 2014 and 2015.

At present, he is writing a book about the archaeology of the contemperary era.
